Here’s a great story about a podcasting summer program for children of U.S. migrant workers in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA USA. The Chester County Intermediate Unit Migrant Education Program gave pre-teen children Mac computers with built-in microphones and had the children record themselves talking about their prospective careers. This exercise not only helped these children learn about technology, but helped them brush up on their English and learn about what it takes to go to school in the U.S.
From the Philadelphia Enquirer.

It’s an experiment that other media companies of its kind should get hip to: 60 Minutes is now offering their entire show as an audio podcast every week. 60 Minutes has long been available in its entirety over CBS News radio; it’s only natural to send it out via the podcasting waves as well. The old 60 Minutes feed, which only featured a segment of each weekly show, is now the feed that carries the full episodes.
The first episode to get the podcast treatment was a good one, with Scott Pelley interviewing Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. If you haven’t subscribed yet, here’s your chance to hear one of the better investigative journalism shows in the U.S.

The brains behind one of the earliest popular video podcasts, Rocketboom, are trying out a new form of advertising courtesy of their new partners at Blip.tv, a free hosting company for video podcasters. If you watch Rocketboom on the Internet, you’ll now see an interactive ad (you click the ad and go to the sponsor’s site) at the bottom of the Rocketboom screen. If you don’t want to see the ad, you can X it out — kind of like the pop-up ads you see all over the Web.
Because you can “turn off” the ad, Rocketboom thinks this form of advertising is desirable to their viewers who like the sponsor and not intrusive to those who don’t. The first sponsor is Sarah Silverman of Comedy Central fame. Silverman is a bit of a polarizing choice to be the first sponsor, as some people love her comedy and others are genuinely offended by her or do not find her funny. The word isn’t out yet as to how Rocketboom will select sponsors for future shows, and that could very well be the difference in how fans of Rocketboom accept advertising on top of the formerly ad-free podcast.

Every week we spotlight a podcast that’s either unique, compelling, spectacular, or some combination thereof. The Lyric Opera of Chicago podcast is that combination, coming from the sort of industry that very much benefits from the intimacy of the podcast medium. This first podcast is well-produced like you’d expect from an operatic production; the twist here that strikes us is the behind-the-scenes, almost informal chatting. It’s off-the-cuff in a way that tempers the sort of stuffy reputation that keeps many younger people from learning more about opera and its rich history. Count me as one who has been fed his medicine (it’s a feed — get it? oooh … ).

Speaking of subdomains on Podcast.com, as we just did, we’re now offering you more options for getting podcast feeds on your mobile phones, separated by subject matter. Your phone want video podcasts? There they are. News podcasts? NFL podcasts? It seems so easy. For any subdomain on our site, such as music.podcast.com, just stick the word ‘mobile’ before podcast.com (music.mobile.podcast.com) and you’re set.
We’re creating new subdomains every day (and making the content on our subdomains better) so you’re options will only increase. And we’re still sporting mobile.podcast.com if you want the whole ball of wax straight from our home page.
Will podcasts we’ve organized look great on your phone? We think so, but how about podcasts YOU’VE organized? That, my friends, is why we say “stay tuned” …

[NOTE: we now call these Channels, and you can learn more about them here.] You might have noticed the changing list of subdomains on the left side of our home page. That’s because we’re starting to develop more subdomains based on brands and terms. We’ll be announcing more about this soon. If you’d like more information on getting your own subdomain on Podcast.com, email us here or at info [at] podcast [dot] com.

WaveLab, a set of audio editing and mastering programs for both the PC and the Mac, now allows you to post podcasts to the Web using WaveLab Essentials 6. WaveLab E6 can be used on its own to edit, master, and post podcasts or can be used with music production programs such as Cubase or music creation programs such as Sequel.
E6 has podcasting features that will appeal to newcomers, according to the Steinberg website, but provides many of the bells and whistles that any podcast producer will enjoy, including resizing a photo for your podcast feed, creating templates so you can make new podcast episodes easily, and allowing video and PDFs as well as audio in your podcast feed.

Unless you’re living in Pakistan or its neighboring countries (or in this case, Seattle WA USA), you probably don’t have much perspective on how Pakistan feels it’s represented in the rest of the world. But that’s what podcasting is for, allowing anyone with a microphone and a computer to educate others, and that’s where the Pak Cast aims to teach us all. If you want “the full spectrum of perspectives on Pakistan and its place in the world”, start right here.
